Helmut Newton, 82, the photographer whose erotic pictures influenced a generation of fashion illustrations, has donated his negatives and prints to Berlin, the city where he was born.

Officials said the negotiations were complete and a signing was set for October 22. The pictures will comprise an anchor collection of a new museum of photography housed in an imposing century-old downtown building. "I've fallen in love with the building," Newton was quoted saying. He remembered seeing it from the train platform as he left Berlin for the last time on 5 December 1938, leaving behind his wealthy Jewish parents who were convinced Hitler would not hurt them.

Newton ended up in Australia, fought in that nation's army and acquired its citizenship, and set up as a photographer. He married Australian June Browne in 1948 and they have mainly lived in Monaco. Many of his photographs have appeared in the New York fashion magazine Vogue.

Nicknamed the "King of Kink" for his fascination with the perverse, he set off a trend to artful photographs of semi-naked women in the midst of symbols of violence. Critics have called his work both sexist and pornographic.

Announcing the acquisition, Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, who heads the federally funded Prussian Cultural Foundation, said the new museum would open in spring next year. It would include existing Berlin collections of 1870-1910 Prussian photography, turn-of-the-century art photography and later fashion photography.
